Show up for National Popular Vote (LD 1578) at the public hearing!
The public hearing for National Popular Vote (LD 1578) has been scheduled for Monday, January 8th, at 10:00 AM. This means NPV will be considered very early in the session. This means we have a new top priority for volunteer action: we need written and spoken testimony for the January 8 public hearing. We'll need a big swell of public support to show legislators that this is an important issue that Maine people care about.
If you can come in person to do spoken testimony, that is the top priority! Please sign up here to show us you are planning to come to Augusta. The hearing will be in the Veterans and Legal Affairs committee room, rm 423 on the 4th Floor of the State House.
For Zoom and/or written testimony: submitting testimony is simple: you can submit written testimony via the Legislature's testimony submission portal (navigate to "Veterans and Legal Affairs" then "January 8, 10 AM"), or you can sign up to deliver spoken testimony in person or via zoom on 1/8. Written testimony can be as short or as long as you'd like; here are a couple of examples from 2021. For spoken testimony, keep your remarks to 3 minutes or less; you can include written testimony that is longer but your spoken remarks should be limited to that. I'm attaching some talking points here to help guide you; I'd encourage anyone submitting testimony to put some of these in your own words, in addition to any other reasons you personally care about NPV. Spoken testimony also typically begins by addressing the chairs and committee. For example: "Good morning Senator Hickman, Representative Supica, and members of the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee. My name is Will Hayward and I am testifying in support of LD 1578."
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need any help. Thank you so much for your support!
